The Structural Engineers Association of Michigan (SEAMi) has selected Bruce Burt, PE, P. Eng., Senior Principal with Ruby+Associates, a Degenkolb Company, as the recipient of their 2024 Engineer of the Year award. The award was presented on May 17th, 2024 during SEAMi’s Annual Conference at the Kellogg Center in East Lansing. The award is presented each year to a structural engineer in recognition of their outstanding achievements in structural engineering; mentoring younger engineers and/or students; and their contributions to improve the quality of life for others.

Bruce joined Ruby in 1984 as Ruby’s 3rd employee. Throughout his career, Bruce has served as a mentor to both younger and veteran Ruby staff members. He is also involved in various structural engineering industry groups in leadership positions including his current role as Elected Chair of the AISC Coalition of Structural Engineers (CASE) as well as CASE’s Contract Committee Chair.

Bruce has been involved in many of Ruby’s complex projects and was Ruby’s Project Executive or Project Manager for several award-winning ones, including the Hard Rock Stadium canopy project, the Mackinac Bridge Paint Platforms, and the Kings Bay Dry Dock Recapitalization.

Bruce finds time to give back and participated in Detroit’s Life Remodeled Career Vision Day in 2022. For many years, Bruce and other Ruby teammates participate in Boxes of Love, a Thanksgiving season charitable program. Bruce leads Ruby's Culture of Quality program, where the focus includes incorporating advancements at Ruby from new codes/Design Guides; utilizing programs for efficiency to allow engineers to focus on difficult engineering decisions; and developing constructable solutions.
