Northwest Airlines 747 Hangar

A value-engineered redesign to create an alternative design solution.

Ruby+Associates was hired by a construction firm as a specialty structural consultant to perform a value redesign of the structural steel framing system for the Northwest Airlines Twin-Bay 747 Hangar at Detroit Metropolitan Airport. Ruby performed a value-engineered redesign to create an alternative design solution and win the project for the construction team. The 126,000 square foot hangar is used for overnight maintenance for two 747 aircraft and includes support buildings housing offices and shops. The new hangar consisted of a trussed steel braced-frame superstructure on concrete spread footings.
