Erecting a massive rocket factory for private spaceflight company Blue Origin.
Ruby provided erection engineering for Amazon founder Jeff Bezos’ new 750,000 square foot Blue Origin facility. The facility, on a 300-acre parcel of land, will be utilized to manufacture the company’s heavy-lift orbital rocket. For our client Midwest Steel, Ruby’s engineers provided a stability plan including temporary bracing requirements for a 45 foot low-bay structure, and a sequenced roof erection procedure for a 100’ high-bay structure off Florida’s famed Space Coast. A major hurdle that faced Midwest and Ruby was the erection of 200-foot trusses within the production bay. In collaboration with Midwest’s operations, the Ruby team investigated multiple scenarios for rigging, picking, setting, and bracing the thirty-one slender roof trusses. In the end, a two crane operation was chosen to marry truss halves in the air allowing the project to be executed efficiently and on-time.
